Engineers have been asking us whether Gurit BondPro 315 is a suitable alternative to 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP490*. In many applications the answer is yes, but it depends on why DP490 was originally specified. This post compares the two products and highlights factors about working time, sustainability and supply chain you should consider before changing your specification.

Why engineers ask this question
3M DP490 has been one of the industry’s best-known toughened structural epoxy adhesives for many years. Its combination of high strength, toughness and environmental durability has made it a popular choice for bonding metals, composites and engineering plastics. But there are many reasons why you might look for an alternative like Gurit BondPro 315. A change in supplier, supply chain resilience, improved availability, sustainability objectives, or the need to review an existing specification can all prompt engineers to evaluate other structural epoxy adhesives.

What Gurit BondPro 315 and 3M DP490 adhesives have in common
BondPro 315 and DP490 share many important characteristics. Both adhesives occupy a similar position within their respective product ranges. They are designed as toughened structural epoxies for demanding industrial bonding applications.

  • Two-part toughened epoxy chemistry
  • 2:1 mix ratio
  • Black colour
  • High structural bond strength
  • Excellent toughness and peel resistance
  • Suitable for metals and composite materials
  • Good environmental durability

Both are intended for structural bonding where the adhesive must withstand impact, vibration and fatigue over many years. Some data sheet comparisons:

Property Gurit BondPro 315 3M DP490 Comment
Chemistry Toughened epoxy Toughened epoxy Very similar
Mix ratio 2:1 2:1 Identical
Colour Black Black Identical
Lap shear strength (steel) 26-28 MPa ~30 MPa Very similar
Toughness High High Similar design philosophy
Gap filling Up to 15 mm Good gap filling Comparable
Working time 20-40 min ~90 min Biggest difference
Handling strength ~5 hours ~4 hours Similar
Service temperature Similar order Similar order Comparable

The biggest difference: working time
The most significant difference between the two products is working time. 3M DP490 provides approximately 90 minutes of working time, allowing operators to assemble large or complex structures before the adhesive begins to cure. BondPro 315 has a working time of approximately 20 to 40 minutes. For many production environments this is actually an advantage, reducing assembly time and allowing components to reach handling strength sooner. However, if your process genuinely requires an hour or more of assembly time, this difference needs careful consideration.

When is Gurit BondPro 315 a suitable DP490 alternative?
The more important question is not: “What replaces DP490?” It is: “Why was DP490 chosen in the first place?” If the answer is structural strength, toughness and durability, BondPro 315 is likely to be worth evaluating. If the original specification depended on DP490’s unusually long working time, then another adhesive may prove to be a better fit. Understanding the application, substrates, joint design and manufacturing process is always more important than matching a product number.

How can BondPro 315 help your supply chain and sustainability goals?
Selecting an alternative adhesive is not just about matching mechanical properties. It is also an opportunity for you to improve other aspects of your supply chain and sustainability goals. If the technical performance is suitable for your application, BondPro 315 also offers a number of practical advantages.

For many applications, Gurit BondPro 315 is the closest product in the BondPro range to 3M DP490. It offers comparable structural performance in a modern epoxy formulation, with the additional benefits of UK stock availability, next working day delivery from Intertronics and more sustainable packaging. As with any adhesive substitution, the correct choice should always be based on the application’s mechanical, environmental and manufacturing requirements rather than a simple product number.

Intertronics has more than 35 years’ experience helping manufacturers specify structural adhesives for demanding industrial applications. If you’re considering an alternative to 3M DP490, we can help assess whether BondPro 315 is suitable for your substrates, joint design and manufacturing process.
